Tiffany Holds the Largest and Finest Yellow Diamond
Still on display in the New York City store is the "Tiffany jewelry Diamond," discovered in 1878. It has never been for sale. At 128 carats, it is one of the world's largest, and finest, yellow diamonds.
But neither that nor much of anything else about Tiffany impresses its neighbors across the way on Fifth Avenue, Van Clef & Arpels, the exclusive French jewelers.
Carol Bohdan, director of public relations and marketing, sniffs: "I think of Atlas cuff links as a small part in the store."
On the other hand, Bohdan graciously admits that no one has done more for developing America's taste in jewelry than Tiffany & Co. "They've been around the longest. At the turn of the century people were going off to Europe to buy jewelry. Tiffany did a lot in this country to educate people. That's priceless.
"YOU WANT WHAT?"
In theory, Tiffany's decision to emphasize lower-price goods sounds simple. But on occasion reality turns out to be another matter, as one shopper discovered.
A young woman looking for a modest Elsa Peretti Eternal Circle cuff links recently stepped out of the searing heat on Fifth Avenue into the cool, rarefied air of Tiffany's flagship store in Manhattan.
